Hello, Comm 105 class!

This is Yuko from Japan.

I was attending SJSU from 2006-2008. I majored in Cultural Anthropology.

I thought I have graduated the university last spring, so I came back to Japan,
but it turned out that I haven't...!
Thanks to the online courses, I didn’t have to fly back to the U.S. and look for a new place to live.
Right now, I am living with my family in my hometown, and working part time at a cake shop.

I took only one communication class at a community college. It was a small group communication class. I lived in the U.S for four years, but in the first year, I couldn’t speak English very well. So I often pretended that I understand what others are saying. From this, I experienced many misunderstandings.

In this course, I want to learn how people can communicate effectively over their different cultural backgrounds and language barriers.

I will try my best to contribute to this course, and enjoy communicating with you all.

Hello Yuko,

Wow, that is great that you are taking this class from Japan. The internet has made it possible for many things to occur - even taking a class from across the world.

I live in Japantown in San Jose and am fascinated by your culture. The people are so friendly and the food is fantastic. One day I hope to visit.

I am sure the language barrier was frustrating at times when you came here. Were you part of the SAL (Studies of the American Language) program on campus? A few years ago, I used to live at the International House on campus at SJSU and there were many international students living there, and many of them were part of the SAL program so they could improve their English.

Anyways, it was very interesting to read your first post. Good luck in the class! :)

Hello Molly,

I love Japanese food too:) I used to go Japantown a lot to buy groceries when I was in San Jose.

I didn't attend SAL, but I was working there as a student assistant. It was a fun job to see students from all over the world.

Thank you for the first comment!
Good luck in the class too : )
